Patty Melts with Secret Sauce

A nostalgic twist on the classic patty melt, featuring juicy beef, melty cheese, and a delicious secret sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20)
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Secret Sauce: In a small bowl, mix ¼ cup mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons ketchup, and 1 tablespoon mustard. Adjust the ratios as needed to suit your taste.
  2. Caramelize the Onions: Heat a tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook slowly for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally until golden brown.
  3. Shape the Patties: Divide the ground beef into four equal portions and shape them into patties slightly larger than the bread.
  4. Cook the Patties: In the skillet, cook the patties for 4 minutes on one side, flip, and add Swiss cheese. Cook for another 3-4 minutes until desired doneness.
  5. Toast the Bread: Butter one side of each rye bread slice and toast them face down in a separate skillet until golden brown, about 3 minutes.
  6. Assemble the Patty Melt: On the unbuttered side of one slice, spread secret sauce. Place the cheese-covered patty on top, add caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese. Top with a second slice of bread, buttered side up.
  7. Grill the Patty Melt: Grill the sandwich in the skillet until it’s golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  8. Slice & Serve: Remove from skillet, let rest, slice in half, and serve!

Notes

For a dairy-free option, use olive oil or vegan butter. You can use different breads like sourdough or whole wheat if preferred.
